Leading its second weekend in a row, Universal Pictures’ The Mummy is taking the international box office by storm, despite floundering stateside, as the film is approaching the $300 million-mark at the worldwide box office.
The Tom Cruise action flick, which is intended to kick off the studio’s Dark Universe — also inhabited by the likes of Frankenstein’s Monster, the Wolfman, The Invisible Man, and others — earned a measly $32.3 million its opening weekend in North America, however, thanks to an additional $53 million from 68 overseas markets this weekend, it’s about to earn an international total of $239 million.
Universal’s Despicable Me 3 took in $10 million internationally ahead of its U.S. debut, while Disney/Pixar’s Cars 3 opened to $21.3 million in a handful of overseas markets, including Russia and Mexico. Next week, the Cars threequel opens in Australia and New Zealand. Debuting this weekend in North America, the film dethroned Wonder Woman, which is currently in its third week in theaters.
Wonder Woman came second to The Mummy internationally, bringing in another $39.5 million for Warner Bros. and DC Films.
Additionally, Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales raked in another $18.8 million abroad, bringing its internationally total past the $500 million-mark.
